You Dont Use Worm Balls Do You
By: Trevor Kugler

If you spend any time fishing with live worms, there's a good chance that you've engaged in what I like to call the use of "worm balls". What's a "worm ball" you ask? A worm ball is simply when a live worm is hooked over and over again, on a hook that's much too large, thus creating the dreaded "worm ball". Fish will bite worm balls, but only inexperienced fish that don't know any better. To consistently have larger and more experienced fish bite, your worm needs to be presented in a natural way.

When I say natural, I'm referring to the way the worm would look in the wild, and the last time I saw a worm in the wild, it wasn't all "balled up". It was outstretched doing whatever it is that worms do. So how do you effectively hook a worm without creating a worm ball or leaving the entire body of the worm flowing freely in the water to be snatched up? The answer is actually quite simple. By employing a set of gang hooks. A set of gang hooks is simply 2 small hooks tied in tandem, which enables the angler to present live bait (especially worms) in a completely natural manner. This natural presentation increases the amount of bites an angler gets, it's as simple as that.

So, how do you get your hands on some gang hooks so you can try them out for yourself? That's simple too. There are two options, both of which are valid. With a little research on knots, a person can tie them himself, or a person can purchase them ready to go from somewhere like JRWfishing. The choice is yours and the important thing to realize is that you need to use gang hooks, especially for fishing with live worms.

Gone are the days of using the old "worm ball". In my favorite movie, A river Runs Through It, it's said that "anyone who does not know how to catch a fish, shouldn't be able to disgrace a fish by catching it". Although I have nothing to do with fly fishing, I love that movie, and that line is true for all fishing, in my opinion. If you engage in the use of "worm balls", you shouldn't be able to disgrace a fish by catching it.
