Sunshine State Fishing
Huge SinkersLittle Baits
By: Charles White
If your favorite lake is covered with thick grass or lily pads...you can thank your lucky stars. What, you might ask? You can?t even fish it because the grass or pads or so thick, so why would I want to count my lucky stars?
Here is your answer??..because other people can?t fish it either and that is where the big bass are. You can fish it but just not with the usual tackle that you use normally.
This thick cover is where the bass go when a cold front is stalled too. Hydrilla, milfold, coontail, pads and other thick cover will hold the bass when the temperature takes a dip or a front stalls.
So, how do you penetrate this thick cover? Flippin big sinkers and little plastic lures. Use a bullet sinker that is an ounce or more with a 3? craw. Don?t forget to peg the sinker though. Slow you reel ratio down, that allows for more power. This is a great technique when the thick grass or pads are in 4 feet of water or less. It?s also a good tactic to use in the winter, the grass mats don?t have to be green, just there and thick. Does your lake have a lot of fishing pressure? Guess where the bass will be? Yep, right in the heart of the thick stuff.
Now getting through all that grass or pads might take a little getting used too. You might even have to over had cast with the flippin stick you?re using to penetrate the cover. The important thing is to get to where the bass are. Use that big sinker, peg it and use a small plastic lure. A big plastic lure or lures with legs will get caught in the grass so try the craw or smaller lures. Be sure to Texas rig the lure and use braided line for less stretch. Remember, you are going to be pulling the bass and grass both when you hook one. Use wide gap hooks with a 7 or 7 ? foot flippin rod.
