Crappie Catching Tips
By: Trevor Kugler
Crappie are one of the most popular fish in the United States to spend time trying to catch, and it's not because their great fighters or because they grow to gargantuan sizes. It's because when cooked they are one of the most delicious species of fish that swims in freshwater. That's right, although their name might nor suggest it, Crappie are flat out delectable. In this article I'm going to reveal a few tips that will hopefully help you catch a couple more of these delicious treats.
1) Use Live Minnows - Although this sounds as obvious as a nose being located on your face, the fact still needs to be mentioned. Live minnows are a Crappie's favorite food. Your minnows being alive are integral to your success. A dead minnow won't catch anything and if the minnow is on its last legs (about to die) it will be of little use as well. Keeping your bait lively is a key to success.
2) Use Small Hooks - The smaller the hook that can be used the better. The less visible your hook is to the fish, the better. Some angler use gold hooks as a sort of attractant which is fine, they just need to be a manageable size. Size four would be the absolute largest that I would suggest for Crappie and hooks along the size of 6 or 8 have always worked well for me.
3) Use Gang Hooks - What are gang hooks? Gang hooks are simply 2 small hooks tied in tandem. They are the best way to present live bait. In the case of live minnows, simply hook the top hook through the minnow's lips and leave the second hook free. Or you can hook the second hook into the minnows tail, the choice is yours. The point is that by using a set of gang hooks, which obviously has 2 hooks, you effectively double your chances of a hook set.
4) Crappie Love The Dark - If at all possible, fish for Crappie at night. A very popular technique is using a submersible light to attract bait fish, which will in turn attract Crappie. This is why you see anglers with lanterns hanging off of fishing piers. The light attracts baitfish, which will attract the Crappie.
These simple tips will help you catch more Crappie. It's one thing to fish for a Crappie, anyone can do that. It's another thing all together to catch Crappie. These simple tips will help you catch Crappie, which is the important thing. Your dinner table will be happy, I promise you that.
