Charter Fishing At Its Best
By: Lauren Ashe

It started off as an overcast misty morning as the sun began to come up over the horizon. The summer time in Hawaii brings longer days and shorter nights, thus it was 5:30 am as we unloaded our truck with beverages, snacks and food for our first Hawaiian Charter fishing adventure.

We were excited to go on a journey to the depths of the pacific ocean, a place that we could only dream of going as youngsters growing up in Hawaii. Our fathers would take us wading along reefs and beaches with our poles bated with shrimp or worms, but to go big game fishing on a 30ft boat was bliss for me and my cousins.

The opportunity was given to us by Captain Mark with the North Shore Sport Fishing company located in the Haleiwa harbor on the north shore of Oahu. The charter would be 6 hours long and the first 50 lbs of fish that we would catch we can keep. 50 lbs of fish! I never came home with more then 2 lbs of fish when casting from the shore.

We were out about 9 miles and the view was amazing I have never seen the island of oahu from a boat. Using his sonar tracking device Captain Mark was able to position us in an area where a school of yellowfin tuna were grazing. Just 20 minutes after we cast the first line we got a bite. The excitement of pulling in my first "Big Game" fish was like no other. I didn?t do it myself of course but I will never forget the experience.

We took home my 65 pounder and made sashimi (raw fish meat dipped In shoyu). Captain Mark and the North Shore Sport Fishing crew made my first fishing charter adventure a priceless one.
